Celebrating Singapore’s Essence: My Experience at the Singapore National Day Art Exhibition 2024

Last year, I had the honor of participating in the Singapore National Day Art Exhibition 2024, organized by the Federation of Art Societies Singapore (FASS) to commemorate Singapore’s 59th National Day. As a member of the Women Artist Association Singapore, I was proud to contribute my artwork alongside many talented artists who came together to celebrate Singapore’s independence through visual art.

An Exhibition with a Purpose

Celebrating Singapore’s National Day with an art exhibition is a long-standing tradition of FASS, bringing artists together to express their interpretations of the nation’s journey. This exhibition aims to promote the visual arts in Singapore, support member art societies and their artists, and strengthen Singapore’s role as a regional hub for the arts.

My Artwork: A Culinary Tribute to Singapore

For this exhibition, I contributed a piece from my food series, a watercolor painting of chicken rice, set against the backdrop of the Singapore national flag. Chicken rice, often regarded as Singapore’s unofficial national dish, represents the heart of our local food culture. Through this painting, I wanted to capture the everyday essence of Singapore, where food is more than just nourishment; it is a cultural symbol that connects people across generations.

The red and white of the national flag in the background served as a tribute to Singapore’s unity, resilience, and shared heritage. This piece was my way of celebrating the simple yet meaningful traditions that define our national identity.

A Meaningful Experience

Being part of this exhibition was a deeply rewarding experience. It was inspiring to see how different artists interpreted Singapore’s journey through their art and how visitors engaged with the works on display. Art has the power to preserve history, evoke emotions, and tell stories beyond words, and this exhibition was a testament to that.
