Embarking on an art tour is always an exciting adventure, but this particular journey was incredibly special. It was a trip filled with inspiration, breathtaking landscapes, and the cherished memory of the great artist U Mar Lar, whose artistic spirit continues to live on. Our travels took us through Chin State (21st to 24th February 2019), where we immersed ourselves in the beauty of the region, culminating in an unforgettable trekking experience at Nat Ma Taung National Park.
Exploring Chin State
Chin State, with its stunning mountain ranges and rich cultural heritage, provided the perfect backdrop for our artistic exploration. As we journeyed through its picturesque landscapes, we encountered vibrant ethnic communities, traditional villages, and intricate patterns of Chin facial tattoos that tell unique stories of identity and history. The crisp mountain air and serene environment made it an ideal place for sketching and painting en plein air.
Trekking at Nat Ma Taung National Park
One of the most memorable highlights of the trip was our trekking adventure at Nat Ma Taung (Mount Victoria), the highest peak in Chin State. The cold weather added an extra layer of challenge to the trek, but the breathtaking views and unspoiled natural beauty made every step worthwhile. As we ascended, we witnessed rare flora and fauna, including the famous rhododendron forests that bloom in vibrant colors, offering endless inspiration for our artwork.
Painting in the wild, surrounded by mist-covered peaks and the whispers of nature, was a deeply enriching experience. The changing hues of the sky at sunrise and sunset painted a masterpiece of their own, and we eagerly captured those fleeting moments in our watercolor travel sketches.
Honoring the Legacy of U Mar Lar
This trip was particularly meaningful as we paid tribute to the late U Mar Lar, a legendary artist whose influence in the Myanmar art scene remains profound. His passion for capturing Myanmar’s landscapes and culture through his brushstrokes continues to inspire many artists, including myself. As we painted in the open air, we felt his presence guiding us, reminding us to observe deeply and express freely.
A Journey to Remember
The outdoor experience, the cold weather, and the camaraderie among fellow artists made this trip truly unforgettable. Beyond just painting, it was a journey of reflection, appreciation for nature, and a celebration of art’s ability to connect us across time and space.
As we packed our sketchbooks and brushes, we carried home not just artwork, but also memories of adventure, discovery, and inspiration. This art tour reaffirmed our love for capturing the beauty of the world around us and reminded us of the power of artistic storytelling.
